Death’s narration

Markus Zusak in the novel ‘The Book Thief’ illustrates death as a surreal character. The reason for this is to build a different perspective for the reader on WW2. People perceive WW2 differently through Death’s insight as he doesn’t reveal emotions. We as humans cannot comprehend death so we listen to Death although he is a surreal character. Death is a surreal character as he is an experience that has been personified to be a human like character. “When death captures me,” the boy vowed, “he will feel my fist in his face.” Death is being personified as it has been given human like features such as a face, also death is being spoken about as if he has the capability to capture. The reason Zusak personifies death is to make him seem more reliable as a narrator. Death is of high authority to us as we cant comprehend him. As Death narrates the story he doesn’t reveal emotions but instead is very calm. This forces the viewer to feel their own emotion to the horrific situations thus conceiving a different perception on the scenario.
